...Italian vehicle maker Piaggio on Thursday said it plans to invest 30 million Euro ($38 million) in a new scooter plant and re-introduce the iconic Vespa scooter in the Indian market by early 2012. "We plan to invest 30 million Euro to set up a manufacturing plant for Vespa scooter brand in India," said Ravi Chopra, chairman of the Piaggio's Indian subsidiary, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd, on the sidelines of an automobile conference.

"We will launch the Vespa scooter by the end of 2011 or early 2012," he added.

The new manufacturing facility will come up in Baramati, Maharashtra, and have a production capacity of 150,000 units per annum.

New Delhi, Aug. 26: The government will select a private party as a joint venture partner for ailing Scooters India Ltd — manufacturer of the classic Lambretta model — by the end of this fiscal.

“We are going for a joint venture and there are many companies that have shown interest. The government will finalise the partner by the end of this fiscal,” heavy industries and public enterprises minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters on the sidelines of a Siam function.

On the firms that have shown interest, Deshmukh said, “The major company is Mahindra & Mahindra and there are others also.”

Pawan Goenka, president (automotive and farm equipment) of Mahindra & Mahindra, said, “We have discussed with Vilasrao Deshmukh about acquiring a stake in Scooters India today morning. Beyond this, I can’t say anything now.”

Rajkot-based three-wheeler maker Atul Auto, Tata Motors and Piaggio are also learnt to be in the race. The government owns 95.38 per cent of Scooters India.

New Delhi: Italian two-wheeler company Piaggio is all set to revive the Vespa scooter brand in India on by 2011 through its Indian arm...

... “This is the first time that Piaggio is coming on its own. The company is setting up a 1,50,000 unit per year capacity plant at Baramati in Maharashtra with an investment of around Rs 180 crore,” Ravi Chopra, Piaggio Vehicles chairman and managing director said on the sidelines of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' (Siam) annual conference on Thursday.

Commenting on the company's expansion strategy, Chopra said that India is a significant market for Piaggio, and, therefore, it wants to have a significant presence here. The company is also planning to launch a 0.5 tonne mini-truck in the next two to three weeks. Piaggio India sells three-wheeler passenger and commercial and four-wheeler light commercial vehicles. “We hope to complete the current financial year with sales of 2,00,000 units," Chopra said...

dus hoe dat hier betrekking op heeft: moest er iemand bij Piaggio op zijn kop vallen en moest Piaggio dus SIL opkopen, dan zou ge op 't forum gene zever meer hebben met Lambretta/Vespa of Indisch/Italiaans :-)
